Now that we’ve exhausted ourselves with all the buzzing around (mentally if not physically) of the Gemini Season, it’s time to come back home for some nourishing, protective nurturance during Cancer Season.
Please do be aware that I work with the sidereal zodiac, which considers astrology from the actual placement of the stars in the current time. You can check this out for a quick 101 on Sidereal Astrology.
Sidereal Cancer – July 18th to August 8th
The Sun actually rises in the constellation of Cancer from 18th July through to 8th August. Cancer is a small constellation so its season runs for only 3 weeks. And, yes if you read up about sidereal astrology, these dates are not set in stone, over almost three quarters of a century the dates will change by one day, in accordance with precession.
So Who Needs to Really Read this?
People who are born between July 17th(NB see above comment about the dates changing; what this means is depending on how old the person is they may have been born into Cancer season even if they were born on the 17th July) and August 8th. Being born between these dates means that your ‘Sun’ sign is in Cancer and you identify as a Cancer. You most likely see yourself as gentle, caring, sensitive and brimming with empathy!
People who know their astrology chart and can identify that either their Moon or their Ascendant (Rising) is in Cancer.
* If your Moon is in Cancer this means that you need to feel Cancer qualities for emotional health – you need to be able to both give and receive love, warmth and security in relationships with people you care about
* If your Ascendant/ Rising sign is Cancer, this means that this is the sign that was on the Eastern horizon when you were born and it is what you are becoming and are developing through this life. You are becoming intuitive, reflective and tenacious
Lastly, again for those who can read their birth chart, if you have Cancer on the cusp of your 6th house, this is the house of health & wellbeing (amongst other things) so it is pertinent for you. For those who have no idea what I’m talking about, again go back to this first Blog in the series for more information on Houses.
Also of course if you are in a significant relationship (parent, child, partner, lover, close friend or colleague) with someone who has Cancer Sun, Moon or Ascendant (or 6th House) then this could be useful information for you! Enjoy!
Cancer is the first of the three Water signs in the zodiac – drenching its loved ones with solicitude, protection and emotional expression.
Water classically represents emotion, and all water signs will experience emotions running deep through them, and have an innate need to express these emotions openly and with regularity. Water signs are able to instinctively empathise with others, and need to take care that they don’t drown themselves in doing this, or open themselves up too easily to manipulation! Water signs can be highly imaginative and can also be over sensitive.
Cancer is also the second of the 4 Cardinal mode signs – the first one was Aries. The Cardinal nature of Cancer brings us firmly into our humanity. It is the first sign that is associated with relationships as we have moved onto the right side of the zodiac wheel. Cancer grounds us into ourselves with feelings after all the action, sensation and thinking of the first three signs.
The Wheel of the Year
As I discussed in my piece on Gemini, equating the zodiac with the seasons begins to be increasing tricky from Gemini onwards. Feel free to check out my previous explanations of Aries and Taurus in relation to the seasons. Western Tropical Astrology will still tend to make the association between the seasons and the zodiac, and this only works well in the Northern hemisphere. Cancer season in this context is the first third of Summer (mid-summer in Sidereal astrology).
I actually have a hard time equating cold, watery Cancer with summer, so in this instance the southern hemisphere – where Cancer season is mid-winter – can easily adopt the energy of this constellation: focusing on the home, turning thoughts inward and protecting ourselves from the harsh winter elements with cosiness and loving nourishment.
Moon and the Crab
Cancer is ruled by the Moon, and unlike some other planets, this is the only constellation ruled by the silver faced one. Most people can relate to feeling different types of emotions with the different phases of the moon each month. This is because the moon rules our feeling, emotional selves. We all know as well that the moon controls the tides, and afterall our bodies are 60-80% water, so no wonder many people go a little bonkers when she’s full!
The symbol of Cancer is the Crab. What a perfect symbol for this sign! A water creature that carries its home upon its back – a strong, protective shell to shield its delicate, sensitive flesh. The Crab also of course has sharp pincers to protect itself with, just try testing a Cancer’s instinct to protect those it loves to feel those pincers do their job!
The Fourth House
In astrology, the chart is divided into 12 houses, which refer to 12 different areas of life. If a planet or a sign is ‘in a house’ this will give us the information about which area of life their energetic affect is going to be felt in.
Each of the signs ‘rules’ one of the houses. This means that they each have a particular area of life in which they are most comfortable, they have a natural affinity to it.
Cancer, as the fourth sign, rules the fourth house. The fourth house is all about home and family. At the “nadir” – the bottom – of the astrological wheel, the fourth house depicts where we come from, the often unconcscious impacts of your upbringing. Your parents, particularly your mother, or whomever is the more ‘unconditional’ parent, will be represented in the fourth house. The fourth house contains our heritage and family traditions, including from a health perspective, traditional foods and ways of cooking that become our ‘soul’ foods. In this house is real estate in general, but especially the home of course. Land is more of an asset that would sit in the second house. However, nurturing ourselves from the land with farming and gardening is a fourth house activity.
Each sign of the zodiac also has a particular body type associated with it, but this is largely based on the elements, so all Water types will have a similar body type, which is round and soft, tending towards a pear shape. This means is that people who have Water as the dominant element in their chart are more likely to tend towards a cuddly build.
Water signs tend to have a slow metabolism and can easily gain excess weight and retain water.
It is common for people to have the body type that equates to their rising sign element because it is in the 1st House, which concerns image and body. This is not always true though and your body type may relate more to the most dominant element in your chart, or a combination of that and your rising sign. If you want to find out for yourself book a session.
From an eastern medical point of view the Cancer constitution tends to be cold and wet.
Cancer rules the following body parts:
Pericardium and chest cavity
Synovial capsules of joints
What this means is that Cancer can tend towards ailments in these areas, common ones are:
Injuries to and illnesses in the above body parts
Digestive issues including food allergies
Gall and bladder stones
Endometriosis and menstrual difficulties
Due to their highly emotional constitution, Cancer people tend to have a great susceptibility towards experiencing physical illnesses resulting from their emotional state. Their whole nature is extremely receptive which makes them very likely to catch colds and other communicable infections.
The Creation Energy is the centre of emotion, just as Cancer and the Moon is the all about emotion in astrology. The Love Energy is the energy that allows us to experience giving and receiving love and compassion, which Cancer so readily does too.

Canoeing or kayaking
Surfing or paddle boarding
