The theme of Men’s Health Week 2018 (11th-18thJune) is “Men & Families – making healthy connections”. I love this multi-faceted theme! We can take from it that improved family connections can improve the health of men (and women, for that matter), that family can be very influential on the wellbeing of men, and that the emotional wellbeing of both men and women is dependent on connection with other humans and finding the right tribe. Unfortunately it seems that men in general are not nearly as good at making and sustaining healthy connections as women are and this is one of the contributing factors to men’s health being overall a lot worse than women’s health. Men die younger, have more preventable diseases, more accidents and a greater risk of lifestyle related disease than women, which is why Men’s Health Week is a thing! Men seek advice and interventions for symptoms at a rate that is much slower and less frequent than women, almost certainly contributing to their higher rates of disease and early morbidity. What we really want everyone to do is to work on prevention and looking at underlying causes, rather than just band-aid solutions and treating symptoms. Western culture dictates that men should be outwardly strong, independent and largely silent about what is going on inside of them on all levels – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Men are
The digestive system remains top of mind for me at the moment! If you regularly read my Blog or see my videos you’ll know that I do talk about it a lot! That is really because (paraphrasing Hippocrates – father of medicine, here) all Wellbeing begins in the Gut. In the Wellbeing Assessment that I do with clients when we begin working together one of the key things that we discuss is their diet and whether or not they have thought about the health of their gut microbiome lately! Because of the amazing connection between the gut and the brain many of the things that people often seek out my services for – anxiety, stress, fatigue – often have an underlying cause that is controlled and influenced by both their heads and their tummies! Pregnancy gets talked a lot about in the media, especially when it relates to celebrities. What never seems to be discussed though is the affects that chronic stress (including from media attention) can have on both the pregnant woman, and her unborn child. Unfortunately many people suffer from chronic stress in the modern world, which has great risks to health and wellbeing. You may think on a conscious level that you're over something that caused you sadness, anguish, fury or frustration and yet change is just not happening in your life? The problem is that often we hold onto the past on an unconscious and cellular level and whilst this is happening there is just no room for new positivity to move in as a replacement! The heart chakra (one of the 7 energy centres found at all levels of the body – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) is the fourth chakra and is commonly recognised as the energetic centre of love. This refers to your ability to both give and receive love. What is less commonly known though, is that the heart chakra is also strongly associated with your ability to let things go. To let go of people, situations or things that no longer serve you. This is all about letting go once you have processed your sadness, grief, and/ or anger on a conscious level. Do you ever find yourself holding your breath when you’re uptight or stressed or even for no apparent reason? Do you often feel lightheaded or like your brain is fuzzy after a long period of concentration on something important? We often don’t realise when we are really not breathing effectively and the problem with this is that it can have an ongoing negative effect on your wellbeing. Breath is Life Your breath is literally life-giving. If you are not breathing deeply (or not breathing at all for a short period) you are not taking life in! Let me be clear here, it is not a problem to occasionally hold your breath, and sometimes it is actually advisable – such as when you are going under water or when you walk past a smoker! Some activities such as target shooting and even yoga require you to hold your breath as a part of the practice – this is all okay! However, when you find yourself frequently holding your breath or taking short shallow breaths, this is when you have a problem! Stop right now and focus on your breath! It is often only when you focus that you can slow down and regulate your breathing and check that you are really breathing deeply.
