Back to School Essential Oils [Originally published 1st February 2020] This week marks the end of summer holidays for many families in Australia. For the second year in a row we have had a festive season summer break that kept us on our toes and a lot closer to home than we may have preferred, but as I just discussed with my 15 year old - at least we got a break. It seemed a little bit crazy to really feel in need of some time off after a 2020 where it felt like not much happened! Anyway now we're getting back into the swing of 'normal life' and for many people that's going to feel perhaps just as strange and stressful as Covid! What a great opportunity to talk about some wonderful Back to School Essential Oils! February is the time of the year that we all get deeply into the creation and production of the year’s work and after 2020 the start of this new year I hope you have abundant energy to really make a clean start. Exam Prep, the 5 Star Way Here in Australia we’re getting to the pointy end of the academic year, and thousands of our young people are about to go into a different kind of lockdown - the lockdown of exam prep! 2020 has been such a difficult year, especially for those in their final year of high school, like my oldest son. And no where have they had it as tough as we have here in Melbourne, Victoria. So this year more than any other I wanted to share some ideas for helping your loved ones, or yourself, through the exam prep period and of course the exams themselves. Just an easy one for this month’s blog! But in all seriousness, really the main reason that people end up in front of me in my Holistic Health & Wellbeing studio is that they have a problem with relaxation. When you don’t relax and you’re in a constant state of stress your brain thinks your life is in danger and your sympathetic nervous system (fight, flight, freeze) remains in charge. When your parasympathetic nervous system (rest, digest, be) does not get its shift being boss, certain parts of you will go on strike because they never get a break. Yep I brought this up last Blog as well (Boost your Self Confidence). I believe that the chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system is a massive health problem in the modern western world. And that was before Covid-19! A global pandemic makes it pretty darn hard for anyone to relax, even if they are normally pretty chill! It’s the lack of control and the great unknown of all aspects of our future lives, nothing able to be planned, nothing to look forward to… What happens when you don’t relax enough Well you remain in a state of freeze, fight or flight, almost permanently! This means that: your blood pressure stays up your digestive system does not work well your heart rate remains elevated blood flow to everything other than skeletal muscles
In world where it is so easy to constantly compare yourself to others and the ‘ideal’ portrayed online, it is pretty common to spend a lot of time feeling like you are coming up short. Unfortunately the human brain is designed to focus on the negative 2.5 times more than it focuses on the positive. This is a protective mechanism. The brains of our ancestors were designed around their need to be constantly aware of potential physical dangers and react accordingly to enable the survival of the species. Now, the reality is that if you don’t have as many followers, or as many likes, or as many photos of your “amazing” family posted for the whole world to see, your life will not end, you will not be physically maimed, but the way your mind and body react to this situation is the same. Your brain thinks you are ‘in danger’. It sends stress response signals to your body, preparing it for fight or flight. The same is true when the 24 hour news cycle gives you a stream of negative information, especially during a global pandemic. Added to which there are indeed tangible physical dangers that your brain has to compute – the virus, the restriction of freedom, the potential loss of income and all the add on impacts of that which actually can impact your physical survival. The theme of Men’s Health Week 2018 (11th-18thJune) is “Men & Families – making healthy connections”. I love this multi-faceted theme! We can take from it that improved family connections can improve the health of men (and women, for that matter), that family can be very influential on the wellbeing of men, and that the emotional wellbeing of both men and women is dependent on connection with other humans and finding the right tribe. Unfortunately it seems that men in general are not nearly as good at making and sustaining healthy connections as women are and this is one of the contributing factors to men’s health being overall a lot worse than women’s health. Men die younger, have more preventable diseases, more accidents and a greater risk of lifestyle related disease than women, which is why Men’s Health Week is a thing! Men seek advice and interventions for symptoms at a rate that is much slower and less frequent than women, almost certainly contributing to their higher rates of disease and early morbidity. What we really want everyone to do is to work on prevention and looking at underlying causes, rather than just band-aid solutions and treating symptoms. The digestive system remains top of mind for me at the moment! If you regularly read my Blog or see my videos you’ll know that I do talk about it a lot! That is really because (paraphrasing Hippocrates – father of medicine, here) all Wellbeing begins in the Gut. In the Wellbeing Assessment that I do with clients when we begin working together one of the key things that we discuss is their diet and whether or not they have thought about the health of their gut microbiome lately! Because of the amazing connection between the gut and the brain many of the things that people often seek out my services for – anxiety, stress, fatigue – often have an underlying cause that is controlled and influenced by both their heads and their tummies! Gut Microbiome Guinea Pig At the time of writing I am using myself as a bit of guinea pig and investigating my own gut microbiome. I’ve sent my poo off to America to be analyzed (still waiting for the results!) and I’m currently doing Michael Mosley’s Clever Guts Diet. Having been doing this for a week now I can honestly say that I feel a lot more energetic, both physically and mentally, plus I’ve lost more than half a kilo (not that this was my purpose at all!) Anxiety. Unfortunately this is such a pervasive condition in modern life with pretty much everyone experiencing it in some form or another most weeks, and some people living with a debilitating form of it all day, every day. In this video I talk about how one of my clients turned her life around with Reiki, and beat her anxiety. She came to me after her second panic attack, having been prescribed anti-anxiety medication and psychology by her GP (both of which are very valuable, and indeed life-saving in the right circumstances). Pregnancy gets talked a lot about in the media, especially when it relates to celebrities. What never seems to be discussed though is the affects that chronic stress (including from media attention) can have on both the pregnant woman, and her unborn child. Unfortunately many people suffer from chronic stress in the modern world, which has great risks to health and wellbeing. When pregnant women are in this situation there are potential risks to their unborn child as well as themselves. This video discusses the risks of chronic stress to everyone, including pregnant women, as well as the research that is starting to be done on health and wellbeing outcomes for babies whose mothers are stressed throughout pregnancy. Most importantly you can learn how to manage stress when pregnant! One of the things I mention is Lavender essential oil, which is one essential oil that is completely safe to use during pregnancy.
