Healthy Teeth, Healthy You

This week (beginning 6thAugust 2018) is Dental Health Week in Australia. Although for many people it may seem an odd thing for a holistic wellbeing practitioner to bring to your attention, in fact it is right down my alley! Here at Evenstar my work is focused on 5 Star Wellbeing, which is what I believe are the 5 key areas that we all need to get right if we want to live a life of real health and wellness.  These areas are Food, Sleep, Movement, Surroundings and Being. I do often talk about Food because, well, food!  But seriously, I truly believe that our diet and digestive system are the primary source of either good or poor health.  Sometimes we forget that our mouth is actually the beginning of our digestive tract, with our teeth and saliva beginning the process of breaking down food. Good Food = Good Dental Health The best possible way to look after your dental health is to eat whole foods from the earth, and funnily enough this is one of the best ways to look after your overall wellbeing too! Let’s start off our celebration of Dental health week with the startling fact that 85% of people who have heart attacks, also have gum disease.  Although the causative relationship behind this statistic has not yet been determined this is a clear indication that our dental health

The Power of Pain

This video on the Power of Pain was recorded during National Pain Week (23-29th July 2018). In it I discuss the following aspects of pain: its purpose the metaphysical point of view my own recent experience with it treating it holistically with reiki using essential oils to treat it The Essential Oils I talk about Essential oils also work on all energetic levels of the body and provide a beautiful take home tool (for those not trained in Reiki!) to continue their treatment.  Essential oils all have a particular emotional journey that they help us to move along, which is perfect when we want to tackle the underlying emotional causes of our pain, without even necessarily knowing what they are. Interestingly all of the essential oils that have strong analgesic (pain killing) properties also help us with being emotionally stuck, constricted, fearful or controlled, which is so important when we remember that pain is giving us a message to stop and reassess something in our life. My top pick is Rosemary because it is strongly analgesic and also helps to eliminate emotional restrictions that prevent us from moving toward our higher purpose. Other oils that are useful here are: peppermint (especially where you need focus), fennel (especially where you feel unfulfilled), ginger (especially where you feel depleted), lavender (especially where you feel neglected), marjoram (especially where you feel anxious), and

The Sweetness in Life

This Blog was written for one of the most sugar-filled times of year - Easter (2018)! That particular Easter marked the anniversary of me quitting sugar and I want to share with you the science behind our relationship with sugar, especially as a continuation of my earlier video on the gut-microbiome (check out the Gut-Brain Connection). Yes, you guessed it, the bacteria in your gut could have a lot to do with your relationship with sugar! Around Easter 2017 I did a webinar on the Wild Diet (a type of paleo diet) and watched That Sugar Film and realized that I needed to make a change and significantly reduce my sugar intake (which was a lot lower than many people to start with!)  If you want to read all about that process then please check out That Sugar Blog. World Health Organisation guideline on sugar More than 3 years ago now the World Health Organisation put out a new guideline recommending that people reduce their intake of free sugars to less than 10% of their total energy intake, with less than 5% (roughly 25 grams) being even more highly recommended as beneficial to health. So what are ‘free’ sugars?  This term refers to any sugars that have been removed from their naturally occurring source, and are not consumed as a part of a whole food.  Free sugars therefore include any sugars added to

Why physical environment is important to your wellbeing

Have you ever wondered why some places just don’t feel right to you?  Why you really get the heeby jeebies whenever you have to go to Auntie Maud’s or you will do anything possible to get out of going to a particular shop?  Do you sometimes get a craving to get yourself into a big park or down to a beach? Surroundings is one of the aspects of Evenstar 5 Star Wellbeing (the others being food, movement, sleep, and being).  This means that even if you do all the other 4 right, you are still missing a major piece of the puzzle if you don’t spend the majority of your time in surroundings that are right for you. What are your Surroundings? In this context your Surroundings are literally whatever it is that surrounds you. Obviously on any given day you will most likely spend time in several different environments.  All of your senses are involved in determining how you feel about an environment – what can you see, smell, touch, and hear within a space. Do you find those things agreeable? Something as simple as a particular colour dominating a room can completely change your energetic response to that space. Why do our Surroundings affect us? It comes back to science!  Everything is energy and everything is therefore made up of tiny particles of constantly moving matter.  Every matter has its own frequency and if your own core

Letting go of the old to make room for the new

You may think on a conscious level that you're over something that caused you sadness, anguish, fury or frustration and yet change is just not happening in your life? The problem is that often we hold onto the past on an unconscious and cellular level and whilst this is happening there is just no room for new positivity to move in as a replacement! Heart Chakra I wrote this Blog in the week that had Valentine’s Day, rapidly followed by the New Moon Solar Eclipse and thus was a big week for heart energy. The heart chakra (one of the 7 energy centres found at all levels of the body – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) is the fourth chakra and is commonly recognised as the energetic centre of love.  This refers to your ability to both give and receive love.  What is less commonly known though, is that the heart chakra is also strongly associated with your ability to let things go.  To let go of people, situations or things that no longer serve you.  This is all about letting go once you have processed your sadness, grief, and/ or anger on a conscious level.  (For more information about dealing with grief check out my Blog on that topic.) New Moon New Moons are always about sowing new seeds, putting things in place to make change.  But of course it

How grounded are you?

Find out why you might be feeling low in energy, depressed, anxious or even having serious allergic and inflammatory health conditions such as asthma, and the simple practice that could really improve your wellbeing and make you feel very grounded: grounding or earthing. My journey into being grounded began with learning more and more about the First Chakra as I found that so many of my clients were unbalanced in this energy centre. Humans are naturally meant to connect with the planet earth and modern life makes this even more important due to all of the positively charged electrical energy that we are exposed to almost constantly. This video explains the basics of this concept, as well as my own personal experiences. If you are interested to learn more then you may like to read the Earthing book or have a look at the Earthing Institute website. Reiki offers many of the same benefits of grounding or earthing.  If you would like to experience this for yourself feel free to contact me with any queries or Book an appointment now!

Secret Cure for all Stress

Are you feeling stressed, uptight, anxious and really find it hard to look forward to anything , let alone actually enjoy the moment? How would you like to access something that is going to help you make it through any stress without really losing your s...t?! One Hour is all it takes Ok so I know plenty of you will be out there going ‘well I just don’t have an hour’. But think about this, if you don’t make time for wellness, you will eventually need to make time for illness. In the scheme of life one hour is nothing, but what will it mean for you, and your loved ones if you can get through everyday life without being a cranky so and so, and actually enjoy something? Plus, an immune system boost will mean that you are much less likely to collapse in a heap – of illness – when you can finally do stop.  How many times have you finally gotten away on your dream holiday only to come down with a dreaded lurgy??!! Aromatherapy Massage Using your one hour investment in your wellbeing for an Aromatherapy Massage will have many benefits for your wellbeing: increasing energy through stimulation of endorphins promoting relaxation through lengthening muscles and increasing flexibility and boosting the immune system through stimulation of the lymphatic system (removing toxins and wastes from the body)

The Breath of Life

Do you ever find yourself holding your breath when you’re uptight or stressed or even for no apparent reason? Do you often feel lightheaded or like your brain is fuzzy after a long period of concentration on something important? We often don’t realise when we are really not breathing effectively and the problem with this is that it can have an ongoing negative effect on your wellbeing. Breath is Life Your breath is literally life-giving. If you are not breathing deeply (or not breathing at all for a short period) you are not taking life in! Let me be clear here, it is not a problem to occasionally hold your breath, and sometimes it is actually advisable – such as when you are going under water or when you walk past a smoker! Some activities such as target shooting and even yoga require you to hold your breath as a part of the practice – this is all okay! However, when you find yourself frequently holding your breath or taking short shallow breaths, this is when you have a problem! Stop right now and focus on your breath! It is often only when you focus that you can slow down and regulate your breathing and check that you are really breathing deeply. When you take a true deep inhalation your whole belly should expand as the diaphragm contracts, extending the
