Festive Summer Solstice & Full Moon

This time of year, especially in Australia where we tend to run things on the calendar year, we really feel like everything is coming to an end and hopefully most of us also feel like we have the chance of fresh new beginnings with the upcoming new year.  Summer feels like it starts in January and any hot weather at the end of the previous year is just warming us up!  Many people go like crazy to get everything done ‘before Christmas’ because we really have this sense of an ending.

Summer Solstice

This weekend we have the Summer Solstice on Saturday and the Full Moon on Sunday (its exact time of fullness is early in the morning on Sunday so you could think of it as Saturday night).  And then it’s Christmas Day on Tuesday.  So, we are really being supported by the universe in this sense of things coming to a close over the next week.  This gives you a great opportunity to work out exactly what it is that you want to let go of from 2018 and plan what exactly it is that you want to bring into your life in 2019.

The summer solstice is the longest day of the year – the day that we have the most hours of daylight – and spiritually is a day to really step outside of yourself.  Express yourself in the external world, even if that means journaling or just singing in the car – get stuff out.  This is not the day to be internalizing, you would find yourself exhausted if you spent this day navel gazing.  The energy of the universe is providing us with the motivation and lightness to be external with who we are.  This is especially important when the very next day we have a full moon where we are always able to end and release whatever is needed for our highest good.

December Full Moon

December’s full moon starts in the sign of Gemini, where our November full moon was too.  As a reminder this is all about accessing and speaking your truth (especially to yourself!) We should be able to carry this through from November when the truth began to present itself and now should be really obvious!  I have definitely experienced this myself! However in December the big moon very quickly then moves into the sign of Cancer, where it is extremely comfortable.  Cancer shares much in common with the moon, being a very feminine, intuitive, nurturing, feeling, emotional, inward looking and water element sign.  The full moon will not be in Cancer again until 2020 due to the eclipses that are going to occur over the course of 2019, so make the most of this energy.  It is a very ‘mothering’ energy and at this time of year when many people do get together with their broader families, this is absolutely perfect!  If you already find yourself susceptible to excessive emotion at the time of a full moon, this will probably be a big one for you!

Capricorn Sun

Luckily though, to balance all this archetypal feminine, yin energy the Sun has just moved into the sign of Capricorn, which has a very classical masculine vibe.  Capricorn is action oriented, ambitious, hard working and often very driven by success, especially in regards to career or how we show up in the world. Putting the Cancerian moon and the Capricorn sun together therefore gives us a wonderful symmetry and balance in universal energy.  Balance is going to be a big theme in 2019 and these two signs together at the end of this year really drive us to look at what areas of our life we need more balance in, especially areas that these signs are associated with such as work (Capricorn) and family (Cancer).

Managing the energy of the Summer Solstice and Full Moon

To help you to manage the water element energy of Cancer and the earth element energy of Capricorn, on top of the festive season, these are my suggestions for 5 Star Wellbeing:

Food

  • Water – our bodies are 60-80% water so it is always important, and even more so in the Australian summer, but you should be super careful about drinking enough over this period.  Put some glass bottles of water out in the light of the full moon overnight and discover the taste of clean energising moon juice the next day
  • Tropical fruits – perfect seasonal timing to make sure you are eating lots of mango, pineapple, pawpaw, coconut
  • Root vegetables – these delicious types of produce get us in touch with the earth.  A beautiful salad of roasted veggies, red rice and spinach leaves could be the way to go for your contribution to Christmas lunch
  • Protein – we need lots of protein to keep ourselves grounded, just make sure that you balance out animal proteins with plant ones such as tofu, legumes, and nuts.  Eating seafood will give you the perfect water-element form of protein – keep throwing those prawns on the BBQ!

Surroundings

It’s beach holiday season and certainly the beach is the perfect way to balance water element and earth element energies by walking barefoot along the damp sand.

Make sure you take the time to just stop and be – staring at the mesmerising waves or lying flat on the sand to soak up as much earth energy as possible

Being

Use that nurturing Cancerian energy to really appreciate your time with family this season.

If you aren’t surrounded by loved ones, then remember to show yourself love – plan to do things that you enjoy – have a bath, go for that walk in nature, catch up on Netflix

Meditate outside sitting on the earth, or perhaps by the water

Movement

Any movement in water will be perfect – swimming, walking by water, canoeing, surfing

As will any movement that gets you earthed again – walking barefoot, gardening, hiking

Sleep

If you have some time off it’s a great opportunity to stop setting the alarm. Because the summer solstice is giving us very long days with the sun coming up super early, you’re not likely to sleep in very late anyway!

If you feel sleepy lying on the beach, make sure you’re being sunsmart, and let yourself drift off with the waves as a lullaby.

New Moon, New Year, New You

For our first circle of 2019, Vicky and I are bringing you New Moon, New Year, New You! Held shortly after the new moon in January this is the perfect opportunity to let go of the old and make room for the new through Yin Yoga, Meditation and Reiki. Places are limited so Book Now!
