How a break up can be bad for your health
If you have recently – or even not so recently – had your heart broken then this blog is for you!
A broken heart is one of the most common reasons that people seek Reiki. When you have a been through a break up you may feel some – or all! – of the following:
- Sad and depressed about the past
- Regret that it ended and or time was wasted
- Anxious about the future
- Exhausted and often not sleeping well
- Short tempered
You may also have physical symptoms such as headaches, digestive complaints, back pain, or skin breakouts. We have all been there! Sometimes you just need to let yourself retreat into a shell, hide from the world and restore yourself. This is a natural instinct because you intuitively know that you can heal yourself and so you want to focus on this, when nursing a broken heart.
However, the risk with letting yourself hibernate from the world, and life, for too long is that you can enter into a cycle of negative energy. You feel sorry for yourself, you don’t look after yourself, you don’t look good, you don’t love yourself, and then you spend yet another Saturday night at home, watching rom-coms, drinking wine, and eating chocolate because you didn’t feel like going out with friends, and back out into the external world! You are down on yourself, afraid of the future and not letting go of the past!
When you have a broken heart you may feel so sad or anxious that there is actually a physical pain in your heart. The heart, as well as being a physical thing, is also one of the 7 Chakras (the fourth one) – the Heart Chakra, or Anahata. The 7 Chakras are the main energy centres of the body and are active on all energetic levels – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. There are also many other smaller energy centres in the body that follow the energy pathways, or meridians. The heart chakra is one where most people can really feel energy flow (‘my heart is going to burst’) and energy blockages (‘my heart is shattered’). The heart chakra, unsurprisingly, is the energy centre of love, and the flow of energy here is blocked by grief. A key concept of the heart chakra, apart from love – which talks to our ability to both give and receive love – is the ability to let go. We need to let go of things – and people – that no longer serve us, and that includes our sadness and loss.
How can you let go of your grief?
So, letting go of sadness and loss – easier said than done, right?! It is not the simplest thing in the world to achieve but think of all the millions of humans who have gotten over a broken heart before now, and know that you to can do it. Luckily, there are some relatively simple steps that you can take to facilitate the healing of your broken heart.
Feel the love
Stop declining those Saturday night invitations from friends and prioritise spending time with people who love you unconditionally! Children and even pets can also be fabulous to help you feel loved again. Especially if you are early in the healing process, at least you don’t need to have deep and meaningful conversations with kids or pets about your situation, or anything at all!! Make sure that you choose to hang out with friends and family members who are going to say stuff like ‘I always told you he was a loser/ untrustworthy/ weird’. That is not helpful when you are trying to bring positive energy into your heart! In fact try to keep in check negativity or criticism of anything at all!
Well clearly this is something that you kind of have to keep doing and luckily you don’t need to think about it! But the breath can be very healing for the heart. Think about what happens when you breathe deeply – your chest rises and falls – this means that your heart chakra is moving and movement is always good to bring back balance into any energy centre.
Open your Heart
No I don’t mean get back out on the dating scene – you will know when you are ready to do this! As well as using the breath to move the heart chakra you can use movement of torso as well. Push your shoulders back and your chest out, raise your face to the infinite sky. Visualise the beautiful clockwise spinning vortex of energy at your heart centre. For the heart you can picture this energy as either pink or green! You can do this heart opening either whilst breathing deeply or as a part of your meditation practice. If you practice yoga then there are many heart opening poses such as cobra or up dog. Check with your instructor!
As I mentioned above, many people seek out Reiki to help them through a break up. Reiki is a fantastic therapy when you don’t particularly want to talk about what you have been through all over again! Reiki is not a cognitive therapy so you don’t need to be able to explain yourself! Reiki is wonderful for helping to balance the Heart energy (and all other chakras too!). This is because Reiki works on your energies at all levels – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Reiki is a great support tool to use to enable you to heal your broken heart and let go of the negative energy of sadness.
In addition there are essential oils and crystals that you can use to support energetic balance. For more information about these check out my Heart Chakra Info Sheet.
