In world where it is so easy to constantly compare yourself to others and the ‘ideal’ portrayed online, it is pretty common to spend a lot of time feeling like you are coming up short. Unfortunately the human brain is designed to focus on the negative 2.5 times more than it focuses on the positive. This is a protective mechanism. The brains of our ancestors were designed around their need to be constantly aware of potential physical dangers and react accordingly to enable the survival of the species. Now, the reality is that if you don’t have as many followers, or as many likes, or as many photos of your “amazing” family posted for the whole world to see, your life will not end, you will not be physically maimed, but the way your mind and body react to this situation is the same. Your brain thinks you are ‘in danger’. It sends stress response signals to your body, preparing it for fight or flight. The same is true when the 24 hour news cycle gives you a stream of negative information, especially during a global pandemic. Added to which there are indeed tangible physical dangers that your brain has to compute – the virus, the restriction of freedom, the potential loss of income and all the add on impacts of that which actually can impact your physical survival. How often do you show and tell your authentic self to the world? So often in this modern world of social media we only share the good stuff, which is really not a true depiction of our whole selves and what we think and feel and have to say. My prediction is that there will be ever-increasing numbers of people with emotional, mental and physical issues that stem from imbalance in the Throat chakra, which is the energy centre associated with Truth - being authentic, being open and making decisions. The Throat is the 5th Chakra out of 7 – the 7 main energy centres that we all have, and where our bodies (on all levels – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) are especially open to receiving energy. The theme of Men’s Health Week 2018 (11th-18thJune) is “Men & Families – making healthy connections”. I love this multi-faceted theme! We can take from it that improved family connections can improve the health of men (and women, for that matter), that family can be very influential on the wellbeing of men, and that the emotional wellbeing of both men and women is dependent on connection with other humans and finding the right tribe. Unfortunately it seems that men in general are not nearly as good at making and sustaining healthy connections as women are and this is one of the contributing factors to men’s health being overall a lot worse than women’s health. Men die younger, have more preventable diseases, more accidents and a greater risk of lifestyle related disease than women, which is why Men’s Health Week is a thing! Men seek advice and interventions for symptoms at a rate that is much slower and less frequent than women, almost certainly contributing to their higher rates of disease and early morbidity. What we really want everyone to do is to work on prevention and looking at underlying causes, rather than just band-aid solutions and treating symptoms. Unfortunately this is such a pervasive condition in modern life with pretty much everyone experiencing it in some form or another most weeks, and some people living with a debilitating form of it all day, every day. In this video I talk about how one of my clients turned her life around with Reiki, and beat her anxiety. She came to me after her second panic attack, having been prescribed anti-anxiety medication and psychology by her GP (both of which are very valuable, and indeed life-saving in the right circumstances). Have you ever wondered why some places just don’t feel right to you? Why you really get the heeby jeebies whenever you have to go to Auntie Maud’s or you will do anything possible to get out of going to a particular shop? What are your Surroundings? In this context your Surroundings are literally whatever it is that surrounds you. Obviously on any given day you will most likely spend time in several different environments. All of your senses are involved in determining how you feel about an environment – what can you see, smell, touch, and hear within a space. Do you find those things agreeable?
