How to have the best sleep ever Sleep is one of the most democratic, freely available and effective forms of health insurance. Professor Matthew Walker. Unfortunately modern Western society tends to view sleep as being, at best, something that is at the bottom of our never-ending list of priorities, and at worst, something that’s only for wimps! Add to that an ongoing global pandemic of fear and anxiety – feeling like life as we knew it has left home and all that remains is stress, boredom and nothing to look forward to. Good sleep seems to be more elusive than ever. And yet, it is SO important. Along with what we put into our bodies - namely food and water - good quality sleep is essential if we want to maintain our wellbeing and live long, healthy lives. Our sleep quality has an impact on our ability to concentrate and make decisions. In turn this can then increase the risk of incidents and accidents and of course it can have a negative effect on all aspects of our lives – work, relationships, motivation to exercise and eat right. Even worse are the effects of chronic sleep deprivation, which include increased incidence of depression and anxiety, as well as numerous other physical health conditions such as heart disease, weight gain, diabetes and infertility. Most worrying is the reduction in the effectiveness of
Healthy environment...happy, healthy you! We have been incredibly focussed on our immediate surroundings during 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic has forced us to stay away from many places in which we would normally spend a lot of time. It has meant that the majority of the population has had to move their whole lives into the home for working, schooling, exercising, shopping (online of course) and leisure activities. So, what better subject to end the year on, than a good hard look at what is important in terms of having the most healthy environment possible around you. Of course it's important to look at your home because that is where you go to relax and unwind, and especially where you sleep. But if you normally spend many of the hours of your week in a workplace it is also important to consider everything below in relation to that location as well. Is your work place a healthy environment? Surroundings Surroundings is one of the aspects of Evenstar 5 Star Wellbeing™ - the other four being Food, Movement, Sleep and Being. Each of these 5 aspects cannot be considered the one key to overall wellbeing. They are intimately entwined and need to be viewed as 5 parts of a whole - my holistic approach! I will introduce all five components in the content below, but to start with lets look at some
Just an easy one for this month’s blog! But in all seriousness, really the main reason that people end up in front of me in my Holistic Health & Wellbeing studio is that they have a problem with relaxation. When you don’t relax and you’re in a constant state of stress your brain thinks your life is in danger and your sympathetic nervous system (fight, flight, freeze) remains in charge. When your parasympathetic nervous system (rest, digest, be) does not get its shift being boss, certain parts of you will go on strike because they never get a break. Yep I brought this up last Blog as well (Boost your Self Confidence). I believe that the chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system is a massive health problem in the modern western world. And that was before Covid-19! A global pandemic makes it pretty darn hard for anyone to relax, even if they are normally pretty chill! It’s the lack of control and the great unknown of all aspects of our future lives, nothing able to be planned, nothing to look forward to… What happens when you don’t relax enough Well you remain in a state of freeze, fight or flight, almost permanently! This means that: your blood pressure stays up your digestive system does not work well your heart rate remains elevated blood flow to everything other than skeletal muscles
Plastic. It's everywhere these days because it is so convenient. Cheap to produce (a petroleum bi-product), strong, light, easy to clean and literally indestructible. But as with many 'indispensable' things that modern society has adopted due to their convenience, plastics are not only having a massive impact on the health of the planet (through production pollution and at the other end of their lifespan, as waste) but they are also contributing to the ever growing epidemic of lifestyle diseases through their affect on hormones. Plastics - hormone disruptors Some of the chemicals used to manufacture plastics are hormone disruptive, with phthalates and BPA being the worst offenders. Please also refer to my Blog On the Nose in regards to phthalates in synthetic fragrances. What does hormone disruptive mean, and why does this even matter, after all a lot of the time hormones get a pretty bad press? In actual fact hormones are vital chemical messengers that coordinate the processes of growth, metabolism and fertility. In addition, hormones help to control the immune system. Hormone disruption can mean several things, including that the chemicals (such as BPA and phthalates): mimic hormones, interfere with the production of hormones, prevent the effective utilisation of hormones, cause generalised inflammation (due to immune system compromise) and they can also impede the detoxification processes required with excess hormones. Doesn't my body deal with chemical exposure itself?
Your gut microbiome is super important to overall health and is the first topic in this new video series called "One Thing I Know". Your gastrointestinal microbiota ("gut microbiome') consists of trillions of bacteria that reside in the digestive tract. They are imperative for effective digestive function and also for immunity. At any point your gut microbiome are either increasing or decreasing overall inflammation in your your body. Inflammation is the natural response of the body to fight infection and disease but when it becomes disregulated chronic illness can result. I am constantly updating my knowledge by reading books and listening to podcasts and taking courses. A big part of my whole reason for doing what I do is to help people to be better able to improve and maintain their own wellbeing so therefore I love to be able to share new things that I learn. I recently listened to an episode of the Low Top Life podcast (which I HIGHLY recommend) where Alexx was interviewing one of the world's most pre-eminent specialists in the microbiota, Dr Jason Hawrelak. The chat covers some of the other microbiota that are important to consider including the nasal microbiome and the vaginal microbiome, but something that really leapt out at me was the bit about how to best manage the gut micobiome when we have to take a course of antibiotics. We are so distracted these days that it can be extremely difficult to tap into what is often our greatest source of information and guidance - ourselves! Using our insight, intuition and intellect all fall under the energy centre of the 6th Chakra, otherwise known as the 3rd eye. You may have one or more of the following physical conditions if your 3rd Eye is out of balance - either over or under active: Attention deficit disorders, including ADHD Insomnia Sleeping very lightly or not enough Sleeping too much Mood swings Very good or very poor memory Fast/ sharp mind or slow/ dull mind Eye sight problems Eye infections Headache and/ or migraine Cognitive decline or dementia In this video on the 3rd Eye I discuss how you can tell if perhaps you have an imbalance in this energy centre, and need to see it a bit more clearly! Even more importantly, I give you lots of tips on how you can bring balance back to your 6th Chakra using the Evenstar 5 Star Wellbeing approach. If you prefer to read all about it, the Blog was published by Sivana East. In the Surroundings aspect of 5 Star Wellbeing I mention that there are crystals and essential oils that you can use to balance your 3rd Eye, these are the ones that I recommend: Crystals Amethyst – mind balancing, addictions,
How often do you show and tell your authentic self to the world? So often in this modern world of social media we only share the good stuff, which is really not a true depiction of our whole selves and what we think and feel and have to say. My prediction is that there will be ever-increasing numbers of people with emotional, mental and physical issues that stem from imbalance in the Throat chakra, which is the energy centre associated with Truth - being authentic, being open and making decisions. The Throat is the 5th Chakra out of 7 – the 7 main energy centres that we all have, and where our bodies (on all levels – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) are especially open to receiving energy. The areas of the physical body where throat chakra imbalances manifest are: Throat and thyroid conditions Thyroid conditions Fast or slow metabolism and weight management issues Very large or very small appetite Very large or very small mouth Regular indigestion and/ or bad breath Super fast or super slow eating style Ear and nose problems Heightened or reduced senses of taste, smell, or hearing Problems with teeth or jaw (including TMJ pain) Neck pain Dry, chapped lips In the video I discuss other personality, mental and emotional signs of throat chakra imbalance, as well as ways that you can bring balance back

We're up to the Heart in my series of Blogs about balancing your Chakras - the 7 main energy centres that we all have, and where our bodies (on all levels - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) are especially open to receiving energy. We must first love ourselves before we can love others in any sustainable way but if we are constantly giving our love away to others we often don’t have enough left for ourselves. This is why balance in the heart chakra is essential. The heart chakra is the air element energy centre and develops during the fourth decade of life, the 30s – when it is common for people to partner up, settle down and start their own families. The areas of the physical body where heart chakra imbalances manifest are: heart conditions, including abnormal heart rate asthma, and other respiratory conditions generalised anxiety sleep apnea lung conditions poor circulation hot or cold hands blood pressure issues breast problems, including lumps and cancers and conditions affecting the arms and hands. In the video I discuss other personality, mental and emotional signs of heart chakra imbalance, as well as ways that you can bring balance back again. If you prefer to read the full Blog, it was featured by Sivana East. The essential oils that I mention are: For overactivity Melissa – will help to promote gratitude instead
