How to have the best Sleep ever!

How to have the best sleep ever Sleep is one of the most democratic, freely available and effective forms of health insurance. Professor Matthew Walker. Unfortunately modern Western society tends to view sleep as being, at best, something that is at the bottom of our never-ending list of priorities, and at worst, something that’s only for wimps!  Add to that an ongoing global pandemic of fear and anxiety – feeling like life as we knew it has left home and all that remains is stress, boredom and nothing to look forward to. Good sleep seems to be more elusive than ever. And yet, it is SO important. Along with what we put into our bodies - namely food and water - good quality sleep is essential if we want to maintain our wellbeing and live long, healthy lives. Our sleep quality has an impact on our ability to concentrate and make decisions. In turn this can then increase the risk of incidents and accidents and of course it can have a negative effect on all aspects of our lives – work, relationships, motivation to exercise and eat right. Even worse are the effects of chronic sleep deprivation, which include increased incidence of depression and anxiety, as well as numerous other physical health conditions such as heart disease, weight gain, diabetes and infertility. Most worrying is the reduction in the effectiveness of

Clean Eating Part 2 – Organic Food

[Originally published 24th July 2017] So by now you have read all about giving up sugar and avoiding additives, and if you haven't, well catch up peeps - click on the links!  Clean eating - or getting in touch with my inner hippie - was one of the biggest changes that I have made to my life in 2017!  It was the first year I ever told my parents NOT to buy me an easter egg!  Exploring all the alternative grocery options in my local and not so local area was fun, as was beginning to cook a lot more stuff from scratch.  My kids both love pie and I can make a great family pie that they will gobble up!  Yes of course it takes me a lot more time than just whacking a store bought one in the oven but I know exactly what is in it. In this part 2 Blog I am talking about buying organic.  This is something, that to be honest, I had always scoffed at before because I had heard all the research about the there being little, if any, added nutritional value in organic produce.  This remains true.  However, even though you may not get more vitamins and minerals by eating a product that is, or is made with, organically grown matter, you can be sure that you will get LESS chemicals. Healthy Environment…happy, healthy you!

Healthy environment...happy, healthy you! We have been incredibly focussed on our immediate surroundings during 2020.  The Covid-19 pandemic has forced us to stay away from many places in which we would normally spend a lot of time.  It has meant that the majority of the population has had to move their whole lives into the home for working, schooling, exercising, shopping (online of course) and leisure activities. So, what better subject to end the year on, than a good hard look at what is important in terms of having the most healthy environment possible around you.  Of course it's important to look at your home because that is where you go to relax and unwind, and especially where you sleep. But if you normally spend many of the hours of your week in a workplace it is also important to consider everything below in relation to that location as well.  Is your work place a healthy environment? Surroundings Surroundings is one of the aspects of Evenstar 5 Star Wellbeing™ - the other four being Food, Movement, Sleep and Being.  Each of these 5 aspects cannot be considered the one key to overall wellbeing.  They are intimately entwined and need to be viewed as 5 parts of a whole - my holistic approach!  I will introduce all five components in the content below, but to start with lets look at some

Boost Self Confidence and take back Control of your Life

In world where it is so easy to constantly compare yourself to others and the ‘ideal’ portrayed online, it is pretty common to spend a lot of time feeling like you are coming up short. Unfortunately the human brain is designed to focus on the negative 2.5 times more than it focuses on the positive. This is a protective mechanism. The brains of our ancestors were designed around their need to be constantly aware of potential physical dangers and react accordingly to enable the survival of the species. Now, the reality is that if you don’t have as many followers, or as many likes, or as many photos of your “amazing” family posted for the whole world to see, your life will not end, you will not be physically maimed, but the way your mind and body react to this situation is the same. Your brain thinks you are ‘in danger’. It sends stress response signals to your body, preparing it for fight or flight. The same is true when the 24 hour news cycle gives you a stream of negative information, especially during a global pandemic. Added to which there are indeed tangible physical dangers that your brain has to compute – the virus, the restriction of freedom, the potential loss of income and all the add on impacts of that which actually can impact your physical survival. How to get more Energy from Food

Here at Evenstar Wellbeing I’m all about energy, and food is the energy that we consciously and deliberately put into our bodies.  It is literally fuel for living, for every aspect of our lives.  So, if you enjoy living a good life, or you’d like to live a better one, the number one action that you can take is to pay attention to what you are fuelling your body, and your life, with.  It’s a sad fact that many people in the modern western world treat their motor vehicles better than they do their human vehicles! Whole Foods The simplest thing to keep in mind when deciding to focus on your food energy is to eat food.  Yep, simply eat food.  Don’t put things into your body that are in fact ‘food-like’ substances (ie. highly processed, packaged products) that we’ve been conditioned over the last few decades to think of as food.  Your body actually doesn’t know what to do with a fuel source that it doesn’t recognise.  How do you know if something you’re putting in your mouth is food? Ask yourself, is it something that your ancestors, even as little time ago as your grandparents, would recognise as food?  A whole food is something that is grown on planet earth – either plant or animal - and you could walk into a farm and touch it with your

Creation Energy – Emotions and Creativity

Creation Energy is the second type of energy that I work with (there are 7 in total).  To find out more about the first energy type – Foundation Energy – check out the Blog here. Creation Energy is the one that underlies everything in our emotional lives: partnerships and close relationships with other beings fully engaging with the whole range of emotions in the human experience the expression of our creativity. This energy is the one that pertains to the continuation of humanity through our innate ability to create new life and is sometimes called our ‘sexual’ energy.  It fully develops in the second decade of life, during which we become sexual beings, after going through puberty. Letting the full range of human emotion flow through our lives is not something that is valued, encouraged or celebrated in western society and so this energy is one that many people are somewhat lacking in. The equivalent vibration to Creation Energy in colour is Orange and the equivalent elemental substance is water, and thus this energy is strongly connected to the moon and lunar cycles. You may need more Creation Energy if you feel: That you don’t have the right relationships in your life: close, nourishing relationships are missing or mimicked by relationships that are in fact toxic and take your energy.  You may find simply making friends quite difficult, and feel

The Magic of Movement

One of the 5 aspects of Evenstar 5 Star Wellbeing is Movement. I prefer the word ‘movement’ to the word ‘exercise’ for numerous reasons, not least of all because the word ‘exercise’ seems to polarise people into 2 groups - Those who love it and can’t live without it, and Those who hate it and see it one of life’s many evils that they try to ignore as much as possible. Also the fact is that the human body is designed to move. It’s not necessarily designed to do 5 HIIT classes a week but it’s definitely not designed to sit at a desk 8 hours a day and sit in a car or on a train for 1 hour either side of that. One of the many problems with the modern western lifestyle is that it involves very little movement and as a result the population is becoming more and more unhealthy, with lifestyle factors a major contributor to increasing chronic disease levels. As I write this, we are in the midst (well really just the beginning according to the experts) of the COVID-19 Pandemic and this is having a huge impact on human movement. Many, many people are being asked or required to #stayhome. Gyms, sports clubs and even playgrounds have been closed. From what I observe in my local area I see MANY more people than

Foundation Energy – The Root of Immunity and Getting Your Energy and Balance Back

So many of you have told me that you’d just like to get your energy and balance back and that was before we were hit with a global pandemic! Writing this in March 2020 it was very easy to choose to bring a focus to the first type of energy – and one that many people do need to replenish anyway – Foundation Energy. This energy forms the basis of everything in physical life: the body safety and security sense of belonging. It relates to our fundamental need and ability to survive and forms the basis on which all other aspects of our life – creativity, emotions, power, self worth, love, truth, insight and connection - develop. As such, it is the Foundation Energy to which we need to pay attention in matters of immunity. Even if you have a beautifully balanced and intact Foundation – be extremely grateful because you are in the minority – at this time in human existence when we face a pandemic that in big ways or small, will affect us all. If you do nothing else, pay attention and give your Foundation Energy some thought and some love. You may need more Foundation Energy if you feel: Unsafe: I think that most people feel this at least to some extent at the moment. I am a very calm, rational person but the constant battering

Antibiotics and looking after your gut

Your gut microbiome is super important to overall health and is the first topic in this new video series called "One Thing I Know".  Your gastrointestinal microbiota ("gut microbiome') consists of trillions of bacteria that reside in the digestive tract.  They are imperative for effective digestive function and also for immunity.  At any point your gut microbiome are either increasing or decreasing overall inflammation in your your body.  Inflammation is the natural response of the body to fight infection and disease but when it becomes disregulated chronic illness can result. I am constantly updating my knowledge by reading books and listening to podcasts and taking courses.  A big part of my whole reason for doing what I do is to help people to be better able to improve and maintain their own wellbeing so therefore I love to be able to share new things that I learn. I recently listened to an episode of the Low Top Life podcast (which I HIGHLY recommend) where Alexx was interviewing one of the world's most pre-eminent specialists in the microbiota, Dr Jason Hawrelak.  The chat covers some of the other microbiota that are important to consider including the nasal microbiome and the vaginal microbiome, but something that really leapt out at me was the bit about how to best manage the gut micobiome when we have to take a course of antibiotics. If
