Healthy environment...happy, healthy you! We have been incredibly focussed on our immediate surroundings during 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic has forced us to stay away from many places in which we would normally spend a lot of time. It has meant that the majority of the population has had to move their whole lives into the home for working, schooling, exercising, shopping (online of course) and leisure activities. So, what better subject to end the year on, than a good hard look at what is important in terms of having the most healthy environment possible around you. Of course it's important to look at your home because that is where you go to relax and unwind, and especially where you sleep. But if you normally spend many of the hours of your week in a workplace it is also important to consider everything below in relation to that location as well. Is your work place a healthy environment? Surroundings Surroundings is one of the aspects of Evenstar 5 Star Wellbeing™ - the other four being Food, Movement, Sleep and Being. Each of these 5 aspects cannot be considered the one key to overall wellbeing. They are intimately entwined and need to be viewed as 5 parts of a whole - my holistic approach! I will introduce all five components in the content below, but to start with lets look at some
Here at Evenstar Wellbeing I’m all about energy, and food is the energy that we consciously and deliberately put into our bodies. It is literally fuel for living, for every aspect of our lives. So, if you enjoy living a good life, or you’d like to live a better one, the number one action that you can take is to pay attention to what you are fuelling your body, and your life, with. It’s a sad fact that many people in the modern western world treat their motor vehicles better than they do their human vehicles! Whole Foods The simplest thing to keep in mind when deciding to focus on your food energy is to eat food. Yep, simply eat food. Don’t put things into your body that are in fact ‘food-like’ substances (ie. highly processed, packaged products) that we’ve been conditioned over the last few decades to think of as food. Your body actually doesn’t know what to do with a fuel source that it doesn’t recognise. How do you know if something you’re putting in your mouth is food? Ask yourself, is it something that your ancestors, even as little time ago as your grandparents, would recognise as food? A whole food is something that is grown on planet earth – either plant or animal - and you could walk into a farm and touch it with your
Your gut microbiome is super important to overall health and is the first topic in this new video series called "One Thing I Know". Your gastrointestinal microbiota ("gut microbiome') consists of trillions of bacteria that reside in the digestive tract. They are imperative for effective digestive function and also for immunity. At any point your gut microbiome are either increasing or decreasing overall inflammation in your your body. Inflammation is the natural response of the body to fight infection and disease but when it becomes disregulated chronic illness can result. I am constantly updating my knowledge by reading books and listening to podcasts and taking courses. A big part of my whole reason for doing what I do is to help people to be better able to improve and maintain their own wellbeing so therefore I love to be able to share new things that I learn. I recently listened to an episode of the Low Top Life podcast (which I HIGHLY recommend) where Alexx was interviewing one of the world's most pre-eminent specialists in the microbiota, Dr Jason Hawrelak. The chat covers some of the other microbiota that are important to consider including the nasal microbiome and the vaginal microbiome, but something that really leapt out at me was the bit about how to best manage the gut micobiome when we have to take a course of antibiotics. If

Unless you have been away in Timbuktu for the last few years with no wifi you have almost certainly heard about intermittent fasting (IF)! You may have wondered if it is something that you should try. You may have questions about it – what does it actually involve, what can you eat, what are the benefits, is it a great way to lose weight for everyone, etc, etc? If you are one of the almost 65% of Australian adults who are overweight you may be carefully considering IF as a possible way to take control of your health. Although it almost seems like it’s trendy to be overweight these days there are serious health implications that arise from being too heavy. How many elderly obese people do you see around? Not many, because they do not live long, healthy happy lives. This is a really important concern when thinking about your overall wellbeing, from a mental and emotional standpoint as well. I always like to be able to give you as much information as possible in one little Blog or video, in order that you are then able to move beyond indecision and procrastination and take the next best step to improve your wellbeing. Remember only you can heal you! What is Intermittent Fasting? IF is not a diet but is more a schedule of eating time and fasting (non-eating)
Candy canes, boxes of chocolates in the staff room from appreciative clients, homemade truffles as gifts from colleagues! Sugar, sugar and more sugar is under your nose (and probably in your mouth!) during the Silly Season! The problem with consuming a lot of sugar is that the human body is actually not designed for this at all and it makes you feel tired and crappy just at a time of year where energy is already sapped and you’d really like to enjoy yourself! This is our second last Silly Season Survival Tip – you’ve nearly made it guys!! I hope that you have been really trying to get enough sleep, eat well, avoid hangovers and not get stressed about gift giving. If you’ve missed any of my tips on how to do this check out my Facebook page or the Blog. Sweet Christmas Let’s take this opportunity when there is so much obvious sugar around to have a think about hidden sugars. If you haven’t seen That Sugar Film, I’d urge you to catch it during your holidays. What happened to That Sugar Guy (as I call him) in his film was really frightening. He put himself on a diet of consuming so called ‘healthy’ foods for 2 months (having previously barely consumed any sugar). These healthy foods were things such as juices, low fat yoghurt, muesli bars, cereals, etc.
