Your gut microbiome is super important to overall health and is the first topic in this new video series called "One Thing I Know". Your gastrointestinal microbiota ("gut microbiome') consists of trillions of bacteria that reside in the digestive tract. They are imperative for effective digestive function and also for immunity. At any point your gut microbiome are either increasing or decreasing overall inflammation in your your body. Inflammation is the natural response of the body to fight infection and disease but when it becomes disregulated chronic illness can result. I am constantly updating my knowledge by reading books and listening to podcasts and taking courses. A big part of my whole reason for doing what I do is to help people to be better able to improve and maintain their own wellbeing so therefore I love to be able to share new things that I learn. I recently listened to an episode of the Low Top Life podcast (which I HIGHLY recommend) where Alexx was interviewing one of the world's most pre-eminent specialists in the microbiota, Dr Jason Hawrelak. Have you ever wondered how and why undertaking energetic ‘healing’ practices actually does work? A couple of weeks ago it was National Science Week and I was celebrating the fact that for the first time in 10 years I didn’t have to oversee a primary school science fair project! Sometimes I hate my kids growing up but not in this regard! Anyway to mark the occasion I thought that it might be useful to give everyone a bit of a refresher on the science behind my two favourite tools for energetic balance – reiki and aromatherapy. Basically it comes down to understanding that everything is energy. This is basic physics and the stuff that Einstein ‘discovered’. It can be hard to get our heads around the fact that even those things that we think of as ‘solid’ are in fact all made up of minute and constantly moving particles of energy. That includes us human beings! When becoming a reiki practitioner I was trained and attuned to tap into the energy that is all around us all of the time. It makes total sense that if you can tap into more of the stuff that we are all made of and direct it to where you are lacking in energy, wellness or balance, you will feel better! This week (beginning 6thAugust 2018) is Dental Health Week in Australia. Although for many people it may seem an odd thing for a holistic wellbeing practitioner to bring to your attention, in fact it is right down my alley! Here at Evenstar my work is focused on 5 Star Wellbeing, which is what I believe are the 5 key areas that we all need to get right if we want to live a life of real health and wellness. These areas are Food, Sleep, Movement, Surroundings and Being. I do often talk about Food because, well, food! But seriously, I truly believe that our diet and digestive system are the primary source of either good or poor health. Sometimes we forget that our mouth is actually the beginning of our digestive tract, with our teeth and saliva beginning the process of breaking down food. Good Food = Good Dental Health The best possible way to look after your dental health is to eat whole foods from the earth, and funnily enough this is one of the best ways to look after your overall wellbeing too! Let’s start off our celebration of Dental health week with the startling fact that 85% of people who have heart attacks, also have gum disease. On 27th/28thJuly we had our second Blood Moon for the year. This is a Total Lunar Eclipse, and just like in February 2018, it followed a New Moon Solar Eclipse in the same month! We are in the middle of ‘eclipse season’ for 2018 and this means lots of energy abounding, but not necessarily action-oriented energy, especially with a current Mars retrograde (meaning that the action-stimulating energy of Mars is reversed) and a new Mercury retrograde (meaning that it is sometimes better not to take action especially if it involves something to do with travel, communication or technology!) Full moons are generally about closing off things you have been doing during the ‘yang’ action oriented half of the month and turning your focus inwards. What do you need to work on and consolidate within yourself now until the next New Moon phase? What happened for you, or what did you begin, around the new moon (13thJuly)? A total lunar eclipse, which means the emotional energy of the moon is blocked out, gives us the opportunity to reset our emotions, releasing any emotional baggage, especially that which has built up since the February eclipse. In it I discuss the following aspects of pain: its purpose the metaphysical point of view my own recent experience with it treating it holistically with reiki using essential oils to treat it The Essential Oils I talk about Essential oils also work on all energetic levels of the body and provide a beautiful take home tool (for those not trained in Reiki!) to continue their treatment. Essential oils all have a particular emotional journey that they help us to move along, which is perfect when we want to tackle the underlying emotional causes of our pain, without even necessarily knowing what they are. Interestingly all of the essential oils that have strong analgesic (pain killing) properties also help us with being emotionally stuck, constricted, fearful or controlled, which is so important when we remember that pain is giving us a message to stop and reassess something in our life. My top pick is Rosemary because it is strongly analgesic and also helps to eliminate emotional restrictions that prevent us from moving toward our higher purpose. Other oils that are useful here are: peppermint (especially where you need focus), fennel (especially where you feel unfulfilled), ginger (especially where you feel depleted), lavender (especially where you feel neglected), marjoram (especially where you feel anxious), and
Many of us don’t have enough play in our lives. I am certainly guilty of this! It’s mainly being self-employed that does it for me – I find it hard to prioritise play! I don’t skimp on spending time to look after my wellbeing – I take all the time necessary to shop for and cook fresh organic food to nourish myself, I spend 1-2 hours exercising most days, I am pretty careful to ensure that I get enough good quality sleep and I keep my surroundings as toxin-free as possible. But I don’t prioritise doing stuff just for fun. If I make a commitment to catch up with friends then I will always stick to that but I rarely initiate catch-ups myself these days. I always make sure that I have some quality time with my kids – dinner time conversations, going to the footy, seeing movies we all want to see. But when I am left to my own devices I will spend every possible minute working! I am lucky because I do actually love what I do and am very passionate about it but I don’t love that I would feel somewhat guilty if I took a day off to go bushwalking or I spent the night just binge watching Netflix or taking an hour to have a bath. Ironically I began writing this piece and then got
