The Sweetness in Life

This Blog was written for one of the most sugar-filled times of year - Easter (2018)! That particular Easter marked the anniversary of me quitting sugar and I want to share with you the science behind our relationship with sugar, especially as a continuation of my earlier video on the gut-microbiome (check out the Gut-Brain Connection). Yes, you guessed it, the bacteria in your gut could have a lot to do with your relationship with sugar! Around Easter 2017 I did a webinar on the Wild Diet (a type of paleo diet) and watched That Sugar Film and realized that I needed to make a change and significantly reduce my sugar intake (which was a lot lower than many people to start with!)  If you want to read all about that process then please check out That Sugar Blog. World Health Organisation guideline on sugar More than 3 years ago now the World Health Organisation put out a new guideline recommending that people reduce their intake of free sugars to less than 10% of their total energy intake, with less than 5% (roughly 25 grams) being even more highly recommended as beneficial to health. So what are ‘free’ sugars?  This term refers to any sugars that have been removed from their naturally occurring source, and are not consumed as a part of a whole food.  Free sugars therefore include any sugars added to

Silly Season Survival Tips #5 – Sugar!

Candy canes, boxes of chocolates in the staff room from appreciative clients, homemade truffles as gifts from colleagues! Sugar, sugar and more sugar is under your nose (and probably in your mouth!) during the Silly Season! The problem with consuming a lot of sugar is that the human body is actually not designed for this at all and it makes you feel tired and crappy just at a time of year where energy is already sapped and you’d really like to enjoy yourself! This is our second last Silly Season Survival Tip – you’ve nearly made it guys!! I hope that you have been really trying to get enough sleep, eat well, avoid hangovers and not get stressed about gift giving. If you’ve missed any of my tips on how to do this check out my Facebook page or the Blog. Sweet Christmas Let’s take this opportunity when there is so much obvious sugar around to have a think about hidden sugars. If you haven’t seen That Sugar Film, I’d urge you to catch it during your holidays. What happened to That Sugar Guy (as I call him) in his film was really frightening. He put himself on a diet of consuming so called ‘healthy’ foods for 2 months (having previously barely consumed any sugar). These healthy foods were things such as juices, low fat yoghurt, muesli bars, cereals, etc.

3 Unhealthy things you spend your money on because you think they will make you feel better!

Do you always spend money on things that you are sure will make you feel better, or make your life better, only to turn around the next week and have to spend some more of your hard earned cash because things actually haven’t changed?! We are most definitely a consumer society. A throw-away society. A society where you just have to have the latest iPhone every year because of our ingrained and chronic FOMO (fear of missing out) and our Compare and Despair addiction (aka keeping up with the Joneses)! When was the last time that you actually ensured that what you spend on your health and wellbeing really brought about some positive change in your life? Perhaps you are struggling to think back that far!? Or perhaps you are thinking that you’d like to invest in your wellbeing but you can’t afford it? These are some things that you could be wasting your money on, although you think that they will make you feel better! Things you Consume This is the one that we have all been guilty of at some time or another, because it’s all widely available, quick to obtain and relatively low cost. There are 3 main groups here: (1) Alcohol and Cigarettes (2) Unhealthy food (3) Miracle pills and supplements. You have a bad day and you spend money on buying a chocolate bar at

Exam Season Special!! How to Focus and Clear your Mind.

How to Focus and Clear your Mind The modern world is full of SOOO many distractions that it’s really a wonder that anything gets achieved anywhere!! Screens, devices, apps, reminders, emails, messages, calls wherever you are, at whatever time of day the caller ‘needs’ you… All of these things can be majorly disruptive when you are trying to focus and get things ticked off that never ending to-do list. This time of year many of our young people (and some not-so-young) are heading into exam and assessment season and focus is essential both during the preparation study time and also during the exam itself. What happens (or doesn’t happen) when you can’t focus? If you are not able to focus then your results will suffer. This is true for work, study and life! Results may even be non-existent when we are not able to get things done. Even worse is the situation where a lack of focus results in a decision being made or an action being taken that is bad, dangerous or destructive. The Energy Centre responsible for focus If you lack focus, clear thinking and the ability to quickly and easily make decisions then it is likely that your 6th Chakra – the Third Eye – is out of balance. The 7 Chakras are the main energy centres of the body and are active on all energetic levels

That Sugar Blog

So, my latest obsession is clean food. A few weeks before Easter this year two things changed my life. 1. I did a webinar with Mindvalley Academy (I do these regularly – great place for ideas and doing good work on yourself). This particular webinar was on the Wild Diet, which is Eric Edmeades’ variation of the paleo diet. It really got me thinking about all the things in the western diet that are not “real” food. 2. Then literally a few days later my 11 year old had 3 friends for a sleepover and That Sugar Film was on TV. I escaped upstairs to watch this documentary that I had been meaning to see since it came out (meanwhile the boys stayed downstairs watching something that wasn’t a documentary and eating something sugary, no doubt!!) My brain was on fire! How much of what we consume is (1) not something that my grandparents, let alone our cave man ancestors, would recognise as food and (2) packed with sugar, even when it is supposedly ‘healthy’. The food industry is huge, well it has to be, the global population is huge, but this means that their marketing power is absolutely immense. What happened to That Sugar Guy in his film was really frightening. If you haven’t seen it, what he did was put himself on a diet of consuming so
