How to have the best Sleep ever!

How to have the best sleep ever Sleep is one of the most democratic, freely available and effective forms of health insurance. Professor Matthew Walker. Unfortunately modern Western society tends to view sleep as being, at best, something that is at the bottom of our never-ending list of priorities, and at worst, something that’s only for wimps!  Add to that an ongoing global pandemic of fear and anxiety – feeling like life as we knew it has left home and all that remains is stress, boredom and nothing to look forward to. Good sleep seems to be more elusive than ever. And yet, it is SO important. Along with what we put into our bodies - namely food and water - good quality sleep is essential if we want to maintain our wellbeing and live long, healthy lives. Our sleep quality has an impact on our ability to concentrate and make decisions. In turn this can then increase the risk of incidents and accidents and of course it can have a negative effect on all aspects of our lives – work, relationships, motivation to exercise and eat right. Even worse are the effects of chronic sleep deprivation, which include increased incidence of depression and anxiety, as well as numerous other physical health conditions such as heart disease, weight gain, diabetes and infertility. Most worrying is the reduction in the effectiveness of

Healthy Environment…happy, healthy you!

Healthy environment...happy, healthy you! We have been incredibly focussed on our immediate surroundings during 2020.  The Covid-19 pandemic has forced us to stay away from many places in which we would normally spend a lot of time.  It has meant that the majority of the population has had to move their whole lives into the home for working, schooling, exercising, shopping (online of course) and leisure activities. So, what better subject to end the year on, than a good hard look at what is important in terms of having the most healthy environment possible around you.  Of course it's important to look at your home because that is where you go to relax and unwind, and especially where you sleep. But if you normally spend many of the hours of your week in a workplace it is also important to consider everything below in relation to that location as well.  Is your work place a healthy environment? Surroundings Surroundings is one of the aspects of Evenstar 5 Star Wellbeing™ - the other four being Food, Movement, Sleep and Being.  Each of these 5 aspects cannot be considered the one key to overall wellbeing.  They are intimately entwined and need to be viewed as 5 parts of a whole - my holistic approach!  I will introduce all five components in the content below, but to start with lets look at some

On the Nose: health risks of synthetic fragrances

In this video I discuss the world of synthetic fragrances, and specifically the dangerous chemical that is used to make these fragrances last longer: phthalates. When you think about it synthetic fragrances are all around us! There are the obvious things like perfume, after shave, deodorant, air 'fresheners' and scented candles.  (When it comes to scented candles please have a look at my Blog The Glow of Wellbeing) And then there are the less obvious things like cleaning products, beauty products, personal care products, and laundry products, which all come with fragrance that definitely does not come from any natural source (like actual pine needles in your 'forest fresh' toilet cleaner!) Lastly there's the downright ridiculous things such as scented toys, stickers and even garbage bin liners - like some fake lavender scent is ever going to overtake the smell of your 3 day old household waste!! On the nose The problem with synthetic fragrances and the phthalates that they contain is that they are hormone disruptors, meaning that they interfere with the natural hormone processes in the human body.  Hormones pretty much control everything that goes on inside you and you want them to be able to do that uninterrupted.  Phthalates have been associated with: decreased sperm count pregnancy loss decreased size of testicles in infants gestational diabetes breast cancer asthma and allergies To avoid phthalates next time you're

Communication is Key! Gemini Full Moon November 2018

This month’s Full Moon is on Friday 23rdNovember at 5.07pm, in Melbourne.  Its energy is always felt for a few days either side.  The full moon this month lands in the sign of Gemini – the dualistic twins.  This is a very energising sign – the whole ‘2 is better than 1’ phenomenon!  The Gemini moon also occurs in the Sagittarius sun sign period.  Gemini is an air sign and Sagittarius is a fire sign, and we all know what happens when you give air to a fire – fierce burning, perhaps a lot of smoke, and then potentially a rapid burnout! As always we want to strive for balance and resist letting our own energies becoming too overactive with this universal energy.  Gemini all about extremes rather than balance so beware! Prelude to the December Full Moon The Full Moon in December will also still remain in Gemini but the sun sign will have just flipped over to Capricorn so the energy will be somewhat different.  However, you will have the opportunity with the November full moon to uncover a truth – and I’m about to talk all about communication here! – and for the December full moon to really bring that truth home to roost. Communication, Communication, Communication Gemini is very communication focused but as we have just had Mercury (planet of communication) go into retrograde this could

Fire Up your Wellbeing

This is the third of my Blogs focusing on the holistic health view Chakras and this one is all about the 3rd Chakra - the solar plexus energy centre - which governs our overall sense of Power, Energy and Balance.???? If you would prefer to read the full piece instead of, or as well as, watching the video, it was published by Sivana East. We have 7 main energy centres in the body.  These energy centres operate on all levels – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Different systems call the energy centres different names, but almost all traditional systems of medicine recognise these energy centres as well as other minor energy centres, and energy pathways. In my practice I refer to the energy centres as the Chakras – which comes from the Indian tradition.  Many energy healers work with the Chakras. Chakras are areas where the body is very open to receiving energy, from all sources. When it becomes imbalanced the flow of energy into the chakra is depleted or even prevented.   Each chakra governs and works with specific areas of physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.  To get your FREE copy of my Chakra Balancing Ebook click here. Balance in any of the Chakras works on a spectrum, so if you can relate to extremes in any of these areas you may have an imbalanced 3rd Chakra: how energetic you feel in

Mould: the phantom menace

Many very common symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain, respiratory congestion and brain fog can be caused by a silent and often-undiagnosed household toxin - mould! This video discusses how and when to look into whether mould may be causing your wellbeing issues and what to do about it.  If you would prefer to read my Blog on the topic, it was published by the Wellness Universe. This topic falls into one of the aspects of Evenstar 5 Star Wellbeing - Surroundings.  I also cover some simple steps to take to reduce the risk of mould becoming a problem in your home: Open up: open doors and windows as often as possible, fresh moving air is the enemy of mould! Clean regularly: vacuum and dust, change linens Dehumidify: if you live in a humid climate, or your home has been diagnosed as damp, a dehumidifier will help to reduce the moisture build up that mould loves Indoor plants: plants naturally remove toxins from the air, and of course they also produce oxygen so they will make a big improvement on the quality of the air in your home (or workplace) Use essential oils: NB. definitely do not use artificial air fresheners – they are literally adding toxins into your surroundings by masking unpleasant smells with chemicals. Tea tree oil is anti-fungal and has a beautiful fresh aroma, it is literally
